Cyn: Hello, hello and welcome to another episode of In Like Cyn. Are you ready? I’m ready. Let’s go!

SE: Wha-wha – what? Uh uh uh yo! Every thing I do is brand new I must continue… Everything I do is brand new I must continue…

Cyn: And today, we’re high up in the sky in Palm Springs. And we are heading even higher. Because I have myself a ticket. A ticket to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.

Cyn: And today I’m with my good friend Jacquie Marroquin.

Cyn: Are you excited to do the Tram?

JM: I am excited to do the Tram.

Cyn: We are excited. We’re headed to the top today. To the Top!

Cyn VO: Palm Springs is a desert resort city 107 miles East of Los Angeles, in Riverside County, California. The city is famous for its mid-century modern architecture and design elements.

Cyn VO: We headed to Valley Station, at elevation 2,643 feet.

Cyn VO: The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway constructed up the sheer cliffs of Chino Canyon, tucked away in the edge of Palm Springs. But it didn’t just happen. It required foresight, planning, financing and most of all vision.

Cyn VO: The idea was born in 1935 by a young electrical engineer, Francis Crocker, working for California Electric Power Company, on a trip to Banning, California. In the murderous desert heat, Crocker gazed at the snow-capped peak of Mount San Jacinto 10,834 feet high and longed to “go up there where it’s nice and cool.”

Cyn VO: The first attempt to raise the political clout and financing failed because of World War II. After the war in 1950, 8.15 million dollars was raised in private revenue bonds to build it.

Cyn VO: While several Palm Springs pioneers helped bring the Tramway to life, O Earl Coffman, owner of The Desert Inn displayed passion and drive, joining Crocker’s vision as an enthusiastic supporter, to make the Tramway a reality. And it came true in 1963. Coffman moved to Switzerland for two and a half years, to find the right company to build for Palm Springs, and he and his wife rode every Tramway they could. The Von Roll Company got the contract.

Cyn VO: United Helicopters of Santa Monica was also contracted. Six pilots flew three helicopters in 6 hour shifts for two years, logging 7,000 flying miles. 35 construction workers lived in prefabricated houses on site. Friday evenings they were returned to the Coachella Valley floor for the weekend.

Cyn: They’re coming down to get us, and we’re gonna jump on, and go up to the top where it’s 60 degrees, and chilly out up there.

Cyn VO: Your spectacular 10 minute, 2 1/2 mile trip begins at Valley Station, and transports you to Mountain Station, elevation 8,516 feet. During your ascent, you will pass through five unique life zones, from the Mexican Sonoran Desert to an Alpine Wilderness. Along the way, you’ll observe special plants and animals distinct to each zone.

Cyn VO: The largest rotating aerial tramway in the world, the visitor ascending to San Jacinto Peak has a great view.

Cyn VO: Hold onto your stomachs when you hit the towers.
