What It’s Like To Attend The Emmy Awards For The First Time

THIS IS A REPOST…

A post I made on September 23, 2012 on my blogspot blog which I will be deleting…

September 23, 2012 – As the limo arrived to pick me up, I freaked out inside.  This is really happening! The Mennonite Midwestern Ohio Girl still inside me was worried.  One thing I knew for sure I wouldn’t be the best dressed or the worst dressed.  This somehow gave me peace.

ready for the carpet

I had agonized over my dress and shoes for weeks, ever since the lucky ticket fell into my lap.

My ticket

My best gay friend had assisted with my make-up and I knew I looked good.  September 23, 2012 also happened to be Day 54 of my 60 Day juice fast and I had lost over 50 pounds.  I was feeling confident from the recent results.

In The Limo

The limo made its way through the unusually muggy afternoon in City of Angels to the Nokia Center, Downtown.  In the crazy flux of traffic, I felt bad for those without limo passes.  But we cruised right past the barricade, straight to the red carpet.  This was the starting point!  The way in!  I had already come so far.

My heart raced.  But my Ninja inside pulled me back to reality for a final hair check, lipstick application, and boob tuck and we were off.

The sashay of the red carpet was hot, literally and figuratively.

All the shopping, plucking, shaving, moisturizing; dress, shoes, jewelry, makeup — I was Cinderella!  On the red carpet!  This magic carpet.  I was on Cloud 9.

Since it was my first time on a red carpet, I doubled back once (just a little) to keep the thrill alive, lol.  The air conditioning pouring out of Nokia center felt great, but brought the realization of just how hot it was, I was.

All the build-up and anticipation — now there was plenty of time for a drink.

relaxed after some vodka

A little vodka was off the juice fast approved list, for sure.  But goddamn I had gone 54 days with no food.  Even Moses was required to fast only 40 days and nights to receive the Ten Commandments.  That was the best Vodka/Soda I’ve ever had.  Now I was relaxed.  And it was time for the show.

I found my seat in the Mezzanine, basically in what would be considered the nose-bleed seats, I didn’t care.  I was in.  “In like, Cyn.”  Just something corny I say about myself and a nickname (Cyn) my friends call me.  The set design was hot, and filled with its own Broadway spectacle.

The show began and I was happy with Jimmy Kimmel’s launch, and his jokes.  Even though I was skeptical of his hosting skills before it began.  Much has been written of the show, suffice it to say I had favorite parts.  Jessica Lange’s win brought a tear to my eye.  I love her.  And from my bird’s eye view of the place three ladies in yellow really stood out from the crowd.  It was very interesting then to see Claire Danes, Julianne Moore and Julie Bowen go on to win Emmy’s that night.  Jon Hamm, all I can say, what a man (yummy!).  Veep is a favorite show so seeing Julia Louis-Dreyfus win was awesome!

Biggest disappointment: the large screens in the Nokia didn’t display the action very well.

Biggest thrill of the ceremony: were the commercial breaks.  While America and the rest of the world were subjected to advertising, the most amazing thing happened — everyone got out of their seats and started to network, chat and congratulate each other.  A deep voiced announcer would call: “30 Seconds!  Back in 30 Seconds!”  It was so exciting.  We were all part of a LIVE TV show here, what fun. Everyone would shuffle back to their seats, and miraculously by the time Kimmel picked up, motion had stopped.

The show is over — heading for Governor’s Ball

The show was over too quickly, but the night was still young.  Next up: the Governor’s Ball!

Entrance to the Governor’s Ball

Just a short walk over to the Los Angeles Convention Center and I was in the midst of Johnny Galecki, Jerry Bruckheimer (carrying his Emmy), and Julianne Moore (also carrying her Emmy).

At the end of the night I had done some great networking of my own, and sea-salt chocolates with caramel, wine and all the other freebies bulged in my arms.  Like all good fairy tales, midnight struck and it was over.  I wasn’t Cinderella anymore.  Next year Academy, I will be back!  Hopefully as a V.I.P.
