with Robert Gold, Jason Long and others
[KEY: Cyn: Cynthia Troyer; RG: Robert Gold; JL: Jason Long; ALB: Amber Lynn Blomgren; CB: Cody Boland]
Cyn: Hello, hello and welcome to another episode of In Like Cyn and today we are heading to Last Comic Standing! Whoo-hoo!
CUT
Cyn: So we’re getting in the car [me and Robert Gold behind me].
TITLE: Cynthia Troyer, screenwriter.
Cyn: – and we’re heading over to Melrose – to The Improv.
TITLE: Robert Gold – poet, writer, actor
RG VO: And as we ventured out onto the streets of Hollywood, we thought is our friend gonna make it? Is our –
RG VO: I think when you get into a real spiritual mood and you start getting into philosophical conversations with people they should say – Hey your third eye is showing. Almost so it can sound kinda sexual.
Cyn: Hey baby, I can see your third eye.
RG VO: Hey baby, I can see your third eye.
Cyn: The Improv on Melrose. Right here in Hollywood.
TITLE: 8162 Melrose, Los Angeles.
Cyn VO: For over half a century The Improvisation Comedy Clubs have remained the premiere stages for live comedy in the United States. Over the decades the talent who has played the center stage represents the who’s who of American comedy. Including Richard Prior, Billy Crystal, Lily Tomlin, Freddy Prinze, Andy Kauffman, Eddie Murphy, Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen, Jay Leno, Chris Rock, Dane Cook, Ellen DeGeneres, Jami Foxx, Adam Sandler, Dave Chappelle, George Carlin, Robin Williams, and on and on.
TITLE: Robert Gold
Cyn VO: The Improv was founded in New York City by Broadway producer Bud Friedman. Bud hoped for a place where Broadway performers could meet after their show. An intimate setting where performers could simply eat, drink – and most importantly – Sing – yes Sing!
TITLE: Ron Swallow, comedian
TITLE: Cal Verduchi, comedian
Cyn VO: The Improv gained attention as the gathering spot where young Broadway artists would hold sing-a-longs into the wee hours. Bud opened his second Improv on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood California where it still stands today. The comedy included the trademark piano and the iconic brick wall.
RG: Hey folks, we’re about to enjoy Last Comic Standing!
Cyn: The show is starting. The show is starting soon we can’t wait.
Cyn VO: The Improv didn’t allow any recording of the show. And the following week…
Cyn: Hello, hello and welcome to another episode of In Like Cyn. So today we are headed out to America’s Got Talent! And today my co-star is Jason Long! So we are like excited, right?
TITLE: Jason Long, writer.
JL: Very excited! So excited I’m exploding with excitement.
Cyn: Let’s go! Whoooohooo!
CUT
Cyn: So we’ve arrived and we are just heading over to Flappers now. We’re here in the heart of Burbank, California.
TITLE: 102 E. Magnolia Blvd., Burbank
Cyn VO: Flappers is a comedy club owned and operated by Barbara Holliday and Dave Renitz. The pair started the club back in 2010 in Burbank, California. They had a goal of creating a venue that provides a better adult comedy entertainment experience than any other comedy club. A few years later they opened a second club in Claremont, California. I was able to audio record her performance only. The Improv audition was pretty similar to this one.
Cyn VO: If you are looking for a great night of comedy head to these two premiere venues.
