In Like Cyn – Season 1 Episode 16
1 Of My Fav Spots
Published on YouTube April 10, 2015
Cyn: Hello, hello and welcome to another episode of In Like Cyn.
MUSIC BREAK
Cyn: And today… we are gonna head out and go to what I call one of my favorite places in LA. But it’s actually one of my favorite places in Hollywood. Living in Southern California, even though we are in the middle of a drought we are very privileged and there are a lot of really great parks around. And where we’re going to is known as Bronson Canyon, which is ah – on the southwest corner of Griffith Park. So it’s a bright sunny day and we’re heading to Griffith Park…
DRIVING
Cyn VO: It’s only a short drive for me up to Bronson Canyon. In the Hollywood foothills it gives local residents a place to take a stroll. Today, there was a production going on at the cave. There’s there production camp.
WALKING UP HILL
Cyn VO: The guard at the bottom of the hill must’ve assumed I was with the production and he allowed me through. I saw him turning other hikers away. Even the cops waved at me like I was in Mayberry.
Cyn: Alright, apparently because I don’t look like a hiker the guy down at the gate didn’t stop me so – here we are – we just entered the set. I don’t know what it is they’re filming. I wanna ask the guy at the bottom but he’ll be like who are you and how did you get to our set. Yo dude, it’s just me, I’m In Like Cyn!
Yo dude, it’s just me, I’m In Like Cyn!
Cyn VO: So here we go. A glimpse of filming going on at Bronson Cave. There were vehicles marked with the Paramount Logo. The cave was rigged to look like a mine. There were people with miner hats. They were the actors. This gentleman here in the futuristic hazmat-type suit probably an actor as well.
Cyn: There’s the Hollywood sign.
Cyn VO: In 1903, the Union Rock Company founded a quarry originally named Brush Canyon, for excavation of crushed rock used in the construction of city streets.
Cyn: Bronson Cave’s most famous role came in the 1960’s when it began to play the entrance of the Bat Cave on the Batman TV Series. After that it was used in many television series. The cave itself is only 50 feet long. Unfortunately we can’t get in today, they’re actually filming something today.
Cyn VO: Many TV Shows have been filmed here. From The Dukes of Hazzard to A-Team, the original Mission: Impossible! The original Star Trek. Gunsmoke. Outer Limits. Wonder Woman.
Cyn: In 1922, they shot a version of Robin Hood here starring Douglas Fairbanks. And that goes back to the origination of Hollywood. And now let’s go on.
TRUCK GOES BY
Cyn: There’s the main entrance to the cave. It takes a lot of equipment and people to make movies.
DOWN THE HILL
Cyn: We’re going to my favorite place in Hollywood! And it ain’t a club and it ain’t a bar, and it ain’t a – it ain’t a building – but it’s very religious.
ON THE TRAIL
Cyn VO: So I headed up the trail that goes away from the Bat Cave. The lower creek bed was completely dry.
Cyn: Fresh Air! Mmmmm!
RAIN DITCH
Cyn: Well when there is rain, this area – I’ve seen this whole area be slightly a pond. It’s filled with pretty flowers. This is where it rests – you know the water. Comes down here and rests.
AT THE MEADOW
Cyn: Across from this meadow And here that path goes up, and that takes you up behind the Hollywood sign. I will take you on that path one day. But today, we’re going to my favorite place in LA. And that takes us on that little path right here. Into the woods we go!
IN THE WOODS
Cyn: For me there is something spiritual and magical all in one breath when you take a walk through the woods. It always brings out my existentialism. California is experiencing a serious drought. But all along what usually is a creek bed was a bed of flowers. Most of the parks in and around LA are free, and you can be in the park from Dawn to Dusk. When you get outside of LA many parks have entrance fees that you have to pay before hand. So check it out.

Cyn: Helicopters overhead. What’s up, Lizard?! That Lizard’s keeping his eye on me. He’s like Yo! There’s a human on my log! Ahh… it’s not exactly like the woods of Ohio but ah – pretty close. I grew up playing in the woods behind my parents’ house. And considering how little rain we’ve had, there’s a lot of things blooming. But let’s keep going up the trail. See what else is going on.
Cyn VO: “Not I nor anyone else can travel that road for you./ You must travel it by yourself./ It is not far. It is within reach./ Perhaps you have been on it since you were born, and did not know./ Perhaps it is everywhere – on water and land.” – Walt Whitman “Leaves of Grass”
Cyn: Whew, ahhhh! A strange spiky fruit of some kind.
Cyn VO: “Embracing Tao, you become embraced. / Supple, breathing gently, you become reborn. / Clearing your vision, you become clear. / Nurturing your beloved, you become impartial. / Opening your heart, you become accepted. / Accepting the World, you embrace Tao./ Bearing and nurturing, / Creating but not owning, / Giving without demanding, / Controlling without authority, / This is love.” – Lao Tzu “The Tao-Te Ching”
Cyn VO: ” I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms.” – Henry David Thoreau “Walden”
Cyn: There it is ahead. Our destination! We have to go… this way.
AT THE SPOT
Cyn: Basically the water from the mountain sort of coalesces and comes down these rocks, and when there is water – this is a waterfall. And right now there is some grass growing on it. Ah – mostly dead grass. And this that I’m standing on is usually a water basin you have to walk around. It’s so peaceful up here. Now we are going up there. But I’m not going to be able to film it.
HALFWAY UP THE ROCKS
Cyn: Okay, so I’m halfway up the rocks now. Let me show you where I am. I’m up here by myself. I don’t want to – I need to be really careful.
AT THE TOP
Cyn: [Rocky Theme] Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na. I’m at the top, suckas! I don’t want my iPhone to fall. But you saw from the bottom where we were. [singing Drake] Started from the bottom now we here!
Cyn VO: So this is it. There’s no line out the door. There’s no velvet rope, but – this place brings me peace. This place – I could sit on this rock and look at this view all day and feel — accomplished.
