In Like Cyn – Season 1 Episode 17: The Colony
Published on YouTube April 16, 2015
Cyn: Hello hello and welcome to another issue of In Like Cyn.
MUSIC BREAK
TITLE: Cynthia Troyer, screenwriter
Cyn: So today we are having a writing session for a comic book that I am writing. And here with me today I have Robert Gold!
TITLE: Robert Gold/ poet, writer, actor
RG: Hello world. How are you doing on this fine evening?
Cyn: So he’s my co-writer and we are working on a project – a sci-fi comic book project.
TITLE: THE COLONY!
RG: So our lovely wonderful Cynthia Troyer has done us the honor of storyboarding one of our initial pages. Soon we’re looking to hire on a graphic artist so we just wanna give her a frame of reference of what the comic itself is going to look like aesthetically. Ah, what we kind of have inside of our heads. We’re not necessarily artists ourselves. But we have the creative know-how to build a science fiction universe.

RG: Basically in a couple of words we’re trying to do what all great sci-fi stories do we’re trying to touch on the dystopian genre. Ah you may have seen the recent film Snowpiercer, or a great one for young adult viewers is The Hunger Games. Ah, Star Wars, I mean… It’s always some sort of underclass of poor oppressed people overthrowing an imperial government. In Snowpiercer they did it with the – ah the people – the poor living at the back of the bus, who are trying to take over the front of the train where all the rich people live. In The Hunger Games the have 12 poor districts, and they have a capital that rules over them. And each different district is producing something of worth for the capital. In ah – in Star Wars ah it’s the suppressive fascist regime that almost resembles Nazi Germany. Which is something that even – ah we’re trying to do on our own comic. We have a character named Roger Finnler which ah – you may know rhymes a little bit with a guy known as Heinrich Himmler for all you history buffs out there. We also um – have a number of other ah references – to ah different histories. We have a character who is the leader of the terrorist syndicate named Gruewelli X, which ah – you would know was a famous Civil Rights leader from our own personal American history as Malcolm X. Sort of the more militant philosophy that ah – follow the Civil Rights movement. Whereas Martin Luther King on the other side of things was more of a peaceful protester type.

Cyn: We’re discussing our main character. The main female character. The love interest. She is an Empress. Empress Athalia.
CUT
RG: So the basic idea is that our Emperor Maximus was actually just a normal American guy before ah – he actually went to West Point. He became an American Officer. This secret society kind of like the Freemasons took an interest in him. And they recruited them – they recruited him into their organization and then eventually ah propped him up into becoming the Emperor Maximus that we know today, but —
CUT
RG: So the brother was used ah – to manipulate the Emperor.
Cyn: Yeah, and he will be used – and he will defeat the Emperor.
RG: So the – ah the Martians do the – they run the cloning facilities tho, right?
Cyn: Yes.
RG: Because they are the intellectuals of the galaxy.
Cyn: And there’s – They and the Plutonians actually. The Plutonians specialize in other things.
RG: Yeah, the Plutonians are the wormhole dudes, right?
Cyn: Um-hum.
RG: They know how to work public transportation.
Cyn: And they’re expert mappers.
RG: Yeah.
Cyn: And they’ve mapped the entire Kuiper Belt.
CUT
Cyn: Education.
Spirit: MEOW!
RG: Oh play around with education?
Cyn: Education is already universal. Like wherever you get – Whatever your aptitude is toward, you’re sent there. And are given an education based on that.
RG: Oh almost like a –
Cyn: They don’t have classic education like we have now. There isn’t –
RG: Like okay, so you sit in a classroom, you take a test, you find out what you’re good at. And –
Spirit: MEOW
RG: – if you’re more of a left brain kind of guy they’re gonna stick you on some logistics job or somewhere. If you’re more right brained they’re gonna try to turn you into a tactician, or you know — Ah a writer, or —
Cyn: Or like in Cato’s case a Space Junk Sucker, a member of the Imperial Air Force.
RG: Athalia’s offspring. Cato and Athalia has a son in 2301. Conceived during their time in captivity. Together their son Tarquinius Corculum ascended to the throne when both of his parents were assassinated in the throne room by a bomb explosion placed there by a Vauntarian revolutionary who lived under Vauntarian – who lived under Imperial occupation for nearly a decade.
Cyn: Their son is the one. He’s the first human nano –
Cyn VO: Wait, hang on, I can’t give away all of our secrets here.
Cyn: …even though never given the hypo.
RG: Last but not least.
CUT
RG: In our – in our writing sessions um – some people they – they pass around like the talking stick. We pass around the talking kitty and only when you are holding the kitty are you allowed to speak. Um – you pass around the kitty – around the group. And ah – when the kitty meows that means the end of your five minutes. It’s almost like an alarm clock.
CUT
Cyn: I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United Solar System of the Empire. And to the Federation for which it stands. One Empire, under the divinity of the Five Fathers, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all Gaians.
CUT
RG: I’m trying to find the voice – I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United Solar Systems of the Empire. And to the Federation for which it stands. One Empire, under the divinity of the Five Fathers, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all Gaians. I like that last part.
